Serialized units
When individual physical units matter — torque wrenches, testers, laptops, machines — mark the catalog item serial-tracked and register one unit per physical serial number. Each unit carries its serial, condition, home location, acquisition and warranty data, and its whole event history. (Tools are a plan capability.)
New tool registers a unit; Lookup finds one by scanning or typing its serial — the habit that makes handoffs safe.
Check out and check in
Check out assigns a unit to a holder — a person, a vehicle, a team, or a project — with a due date and a condition note. Check in records the return and its condition; damage found at return is documented where it's discovered. Overdue returns raise alerts and show in the by-assignee view.
Transfer moves a unit directly between holders without a round trip through the shelf — recorded like any other event.
Who has what
By assignee groups units by current holder — the first stop when something is missing, and the checklist when someone leaves a team.
Everything here is history-preserving: past assignments are never overwritten, and the checkout history report is the audit view. Calibration and service schedules live in maintenance.
